Red Wine Spill ABCs: There’s nothing better at the end of a long week than a nice glass of wine. You deserve it, it’s been one heck of a year and you’ve been working hard, take a load off. If red is your drink of choice you’ve no doubt been burned by red wine spills in the past. Accidents happen – if your dream of a relaxing evening just turned into a nightmare, don’t panic. We can help, you just need to remember your ABCs…
Act Fast
Red wine spills can be pesky to get out, even more so if the stain has dried! So you need to act fast while the spill is still wet. Grab a clean, dry cloth and start to blot the stain from the perimeter towards the middle. This method ensures you aren’t spreading the spill and making it bigger.
Blot, Don’t Rub
Blot the stain lightly at first, start from the outside of the spill and work your way inwards. When it comes to red wine spills (or any spill for that matter) never ever use a rubbing motion. It can push the stain into the fibres and make it more likely to be permanent. Keep blotting until all the red wind spill is absorbed, use multiple rags if you need to.
Clean Without Chemicals
Don’t even think about running to the store for a spot cleaner. Many store bought cleaners can react poorly with red wine spills and actually set the stain making it permanent. Some contain peroxides which can permanently affect the colour of your carpet. The best solution for red wine spills is one you can make at home. Mix 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid, one tablespoon of white vinegar and 2 cups of water in a bowl.
Dab, Dab, Dab
Grab more clean dry cloths and alternate wetting the area slightly with a rag dipped in your cleaning solution, and drying it with another clean dry cloth. Continue this process until the spill is no longer noticeable. For maximum effectiveness, you may need to run through the steps above several times and to create a new mixture if needed.
