Cleaning Red Wine Spills 101

There is no need to panic when red wine is accidentally spilled on your carpet or sofa, or even that clean and crisp white shirt of yours. In a few easy steps the Dazzle CC team can teach you how to reduce and get to that hard-to-not-see red wine spill before it stains. It happens to the best of us and more regularly then we like to admit.

There are a few items you need to ensure the best removal of the spill.

clean white cotton cloth
bowl
dishwashing liquid
white vinegar
boiling water

Follow These Steps

Blot, don’t rub.
Blot the stain with a damp, white cotton cloth to absorb any excess wine. (Rubbing is the wrong move because it will actually set the stain and spread the stain entirely.)
Make a cleaning solution: In a large bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid, 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, and 2 cups of warm water. Stir to combine the three ingredients.
Soak stain with the solution: Soak a clean cloth in the vinegar mixture, and then dab it on to the stained part of the carpet. The mixture will seep into the carpet fibers, loosening the stain.
Use a second dry cloth to blot up the liquid as you go. Alternate between dabbing on the vinegar solution and drying it up.
Wet the stain with cold water: Soak a third cloth in cold water and press it into the stain to dilute the wine. Alternatively, pour a little water directly onto the stain. Soak up the water by dabbing with your “drying” cloth.Repeat as many times as needed. For maximum effectiveness, you may need to run through the steps above several times and to create a new mixture if needed.
