Is fabric protector worth it on a couch? What it costs in Vancouver
Most people think about fabric protector right after they buy a couch, or right after they’ve had one cleaned and want it to stay that way. In a Vancouver condo the couch is often the only seating, so it gets coffee, takeout, laptops and the dog every day. The question is simple: is a Scotchgard-style protector worth paying for, and what does it cost? Here’s a straight answer with our real prices.
What fabric protector actually does
A fabric protector is an invisible coating on each fibre. Scotchgard is the brand name most people know. Ours is called Ultra Protection, and it does the same job.
- Spills bead up instead of soaking in. That gives you time to blot a glass of wine or a cup of coffee before it sets.
- Dirt lets go more easily. Everyday soil and body oils don’t bond to the fibres as quickly, so the fabric vacuums and cleans out more easily and looks clean for longer.
- It doesn’t change the look or feel of the fabric, and it’s safe for kids and pets once dry.
What it doesn’t do: make fabric stain-proof. It buys you time. If you blot a spill quickly, most come up without a trace. If a spill sits overnight, a protector helps, but it isn’t magic.
What it costs
Ultra Protection is added to a clean, and it’s priced per seat or item, plus GST:
| What | Clean (before the promo) | Ultra Protection |
|---|---|---|
| Sofa or sectional, per seat | $90 | $30 |
| Armchair | $90 | $30 |
| Dining chair, seat and back | $30 | $10 |
| Dining chair, seat only | $20 | $8 |
| Area rug or carpeted room | $90 | $30 |
A seat is one sitting space: count how many people the couch seats, not its cushions. A chaise on a sectional counts as one seat.
What common setups come to
Worked examples from our price list, before the promo and GST:
| Setup | Clean | With Ultra Protection |
|---|---|---|
| Loveseat (2 seats) | $210 (minimum) | $240 |
| 3-seat sofa | $270 | $360 |
| Sectional with chaise (5 seats) | $450 | $600 |
| 6 dining chairs, seat and back | $210 (minimum) | $240 |
| 3-seat sofa plus an armchair | $360 | $480 |
The visit minimum is $210. When you book online, you see the full total, including any promo, before you choose a time.
When it’s worth it
On upholstery, it’s almost always worth it. Couches and dining chairs take spills and body oils every day, and they cost far more to replace than to protect. It’s especially worth adding on:
- Light-coloured fabric, where every drip shows.
- Dining chairs, which catch food and drinks at every meal.
- Homes with kids or pets, where accidents are a matter of when, not if.
- A couch you just had cleaned. Clean fabric is at its most absorbent, so the first spill after a clean soaks in fast. A protector closes that gap.
It’s less important on a formal chair that rarely gets used, or on a piece you plan to replace soon.
What about a brand-new couch?
Some stores offer a protector or a protection plan at checkout. Check your receipt and the care tag before paying for anything twice. If yours didn’t come with a protector, the best time to add one is at the couch’s first professional clean. We apply Ultra Protection right after cleaning, while the fibres are open, and groom it in so it coats every side of the fibre.
Send a photo of the piece and its tag when you book. The tag tells us the fibre, so we choose the right cleaning method before we arrive.
How long does it last?
It wears down with use and cleaning. On a formal chair it lasts much longer than on the family couch. Most people reapply it each time the piece is professionally cleaned, so it’s never more than one visit away.
How to add it
When you book a couch cleaning service online, add Ultra Protection for each seat or chair you want covered, and the total updates as you go. You can read more about how it works on our page on fabric protection for couches in Vancouver. The technician walks through the job with you before starting and again when it’s done.
Common questions
Is Ultra Protection the same as Scotchgard? It does the same job. Scotchgard is a brand name; Ultra Protection is what we call the protector we use.
Can I sit on the couch afterwards? Upholstery is usually dry in 3 to 6 hours, like carpet. Open a window or run the heat or a fan and it goes faster.
Can it go on rugs and carpet too? Yes. It’s $30 a room or rug, and it’s most worth it on light colours, stairs and hallways.
Is it safe for pets? Yes, once it’s dry.
