How long does carpet take to dry after steam cleaning?

After “how much?”, the next thing most people want to know is how long until the carpet is dry. The short answer for a professional truck-mounted clean is 3 to 6 hours for most homes. The longer answer depends on your carpet, the weather and what you do once we leave. Here’s what decides it, and how to plan your day around it.

The short answer

MethodTypical drying time
Truck-mounted hot water extraction3–6 hours
Rental or home “steam” machineOften much longer, sometimes overnight or more
Low-moisture (“dry”) methodsOften under an hour

Hot water extraction is often called steam cleaning, though there’s no real steam involved. Hot water and a cleaning solution go into the carpet and get pulled straight back out with strong suction. The stronger the suction, the less water stays behind, and that’s the biggest single reason drying times vary. A truck-mounted unit, like the one on our van, has far more power than a machine you can carry out of a hardware store. If you’re curious how the low-moisture methods compare, we covered it in steam cleaning vs dry carpet cleaning.

What makes carpet dry faster or slower

Pile and thickness. A short, tight carpet in a bedroom dries faster than a thick plush or shag. Berber and loop carpets usually sit in the middle.

Fibre. Wool holds more moisture than nylon or polyester, so wool carpet and rugs tend to take longer. That’s normal, and it’s one reason wool gets a gentler, lower-moisture approach.

Humidity. This is the big one in Metro Vancouver from October to April. When the air outside is already damp, carpet gives up its moisture more slowly. Expect the longer end of the range on a rainy November day than on a dry summer one.

Airflow and heat. Still, cool air slows everything down. Moving, warm air speeds it up.

How dirty it was. Heavy traffic lanes, pet areas and spots get more pre-treatment and more rinsing, so those patches can stay damp a little longer than the rest of the room.

The underlay. If water ever reaches the pad, drying takes much longer. A good extraction keeps the moisture in the fibres, well above the backing.

How to speed up drying

  1. Turn on the heat or keep the furnace fan running. In fall and winter, this is the most useful thing you can do.
  2. Run fans. A ceiling fan or a floor fan pointed across the carpet, not straight down into it, works best.
  3. Open a window, but only if it’s dry outside. On a wet day, opening up lets damp air in. Use the heat and a dehumidifier instead.
  4. Run the bathroom and kitchen fans to pull moist air out of the house.
  5. Keep doors open between cleaned rooms so air can move.

Can I walk on it?

Yes, right away, in clean socks. Skip outdoor shoes until it’s dry, because damp carpet picks up dirt from soles easily. Bare feet are fine, but they leave skin oils behind. Be careful moving from damp carpet onto tile, hardwood or vinyl: wet socks on a hard floor are slippery.

When can kids, pets and furniture go back?

  • Kids and pets: our solutions are safe for kids and pets once dry, and we offer plant-based options. Keep pets off until the carpet is dry so damp paws don’t track dirt in.
  • Furniture: wait until the carpet is dry if you can. If something has to go back sooner, put a square of foil or a plastic tab under each leg, so wood stain or metal can’t mark the damp carpet.
  • Rugs: don’t lay an area rug back on carpet until both are fully dry.

Plan your day around it

Book the clean in the morning, and the carpet is usually dry by dinner. If you’re moving in or out, leave a gap between the clean and the furniture arriving. For bedrooms, a morning clean means everyone sleeps in a dry room that night.

When drying is taking too long

If the carpet still feels wet after 24 hours, or you notice a musty smell, something isn’t right. Too much water may have been left behind, the pad may be wet, or the room may need more airflow. Damp carpet that sits for days can also bring old stains back up to the surface as it dries, which is called wicking. Don’t wait it out. Call the company that cleaned it. If it was us, we walk through the result with you before we leave, and we’ll fix anything that isn’t right.

Common questions

Why did my carpet take 24 hours to dry after I rented a machine? Rental machines have much less suction than a truck mount, so more water stays in the carpet. It isn’t a sign anything is wrong, but it’s why rented cleans so often feel damp the next day.

Does damp carpet cause mould? Carpet that dries within a day isn’t a mould risk in a normal home. Carpet that stays wet for days, especially over a damp basement slab, can be. Good extraction and airflow prevent it.

Is it normal for some spots to feel damper than others? Yes. Traffic lanes and treated spots get more rinsing and can dry a little later than the rest of the room.
