How much does rug cleaning cost? Prices by rug size, with real examples
Rug cleaning prices are hard to compare because every company counts differently. Some charge by the square foot, some by the rug, some add pick-up and delivery, and some won’t give a number until they’ve seen it. We keep it simple: two prices, based on size, published right here. This is how to work out what your rugs will cost before anyone comes to the door.
Our rug prices
All prices are plus GST. The minimum visit is $210, which covers up to 3 areas (a large rug counts as one), and the promo comes off jobs above that, so rugs are best added to a carpet or couch clean.
| Rug | Price |
|---|---|
| About 10×8 or bigger | $90 |
| Smaller than 10×8 | $65 |
That’s it. Wool and synthetic rugs are the same price, and the clean happens in your home, so there’s no pick-up or delivery to pay for.
Which price is your rug?
Measure the rug in feet, not including the fringe. Common sizes fall like this:
| Common size | Price |
|---|---|
| 2×3 or 3×5 (entry and bath mats) | $65 |
| 4×6 or 5×8 | $65 |
| 2.5×8 hallway runner | $65 |
| 8×10 | $90 |
| 9×12 | $90 |
| 10×14 or bigger | $90 |
An 8×10 is the same as a 10×8, so it’s the larger price, and so is anything bigger, like a 9×12. Anything smaller, like a 5×8, is the smaller price. If your rug is an unusual size or shape, send the measurements with your photos and we’ll confirm the price.
What a few real bookings come to
Here’s how the numbers add up for typical homes, before the promo and GST:
- One living-room rug, 9×12: $90, but one area on its own is our $150 one-area special.
- A condo with an 8×10 living-room rug and a 5×8 in the bedroom: $90 + $65 = $155, so the $210 minimum applies. Add the sofa or a room and it’s money better spent.
- A family home with a 9×12 in the living room, two 5×8 bedroom rugs and a hallway runner: $90 + $65 + $65 + $65 = $285, and the promo comes off.
- That same home, plus a three-seat couch: $285 + $270 ($90 a seat) = $555.
Rugs can go in the same booking as carpet, couches, dining chairs and mattresses, so it’s one visit and one price. When you book online you see the total change as you add each rug, before you pick a time.
What’s included in the price
Every rug gets the same clean, whatever it costs:
- a fibre, dye and tag check,
- a colour-bleed test on rugs with strong reds or dark borders,
- pre-treatment for traffic paths, spots and pet areas,
- a wool-safe clean for wool, or hot water extraction for synthetics,
- fringe cleaning and grooming, so the pile dries even,
- and a walkthrough with you before we leave.
Why some quotes look cheaper, and some cost more later
When you compare prices, check what’s actually in the number:
- Per square foot or per rug? A low per-square-foot rate can add up fast on a 9×12. Multiply it out.
- Pick-up and delivery. Off-site rug cleaners often charge for it separately, and you’ll be without the rug for a while.
- Wool and fringe charges. Some companies add extra for natural fibres or fringe work. Ask.
- Spot and pet treatment. Ask whether pre-treatment is included or added on the day.
Get the total in writing, with tax, before you book. A clear price up front is the easiest way to avoid surprises.
What we ask for when you book
Because rugs vary so much, we ask for a photo of the rug and a photo of its tag when you book. The tag tells us the fibre, which decides how it gets cleaned. If there’s no tag or the fibre is unknown, we’ll ask you to sign a waiver before we start, which is normal for rugs and upholstery.
Hand-knotted, silk and antique rugs get a closer look first. If one needs specialist off-site washing, we’ll tell you honestly rather than risk it. Unusual sizes or one-off pieces are priced from the photos.
Is it worth cleaning a rug, or should you replace it?
For most rugs, cleaning is the obvious choice. A $65 or $90 rug clean costs a fraction of a new rug, and a good rug that’s cleaned about once a year lasts far longer, because grit stuck in the pile wears the fibres down from underneath. Rugs in entries, family rooms and homes with pets do best with a yearly clean.

Common questions
Is there an extra charge for wool rugs? No. Wool and synthetic rugs are the same price. Wool just gets a wool-safe clean.
Can I add rugs to a carpet or couch clean? Yes. Add everything to one booking and it’s one visit, with one total.
How long does a rug take to dry? Most are dry the same day. Thin rugs and flat-weaves dry fastest, and thick wool piles take the longest.
