How to get coffee and tea out of carpet, fresh or old
Coffee and tea are some of the most common spills we see, and some of the most fixable, as long as you treat them the right way. The brown colour comes from tannins, natural plant dyes that cling to carpet fibres. Add milk, cream or sugar and you’ve also got protein and stickiness to deal with. Here’s what works, for a cup that just went over and for a stain that’s been there a while.
Before you start
- Use cool water, never hot. Heat helps tannins and milk proteins set into the fibre.
- Blot, don’t rub. Rubbing spreads the stain and frays the pile.
- Test first. Try any mixture on a hidden spot, like inside a closet. On wool carpet or rugs, stick to cool water and a little clear dish soap, and skip ammonia, solvents and strong store-bought sprays.
Use a white cloth or paper towel so you can see the brown coming up, and so no dye transfers onto the carpet.
A fresh spill: the first five minutes
- Blot up as much as you can. Press a folded dry towel down hard, lift, and move to a dry part. Stand on it if you need to. The more coffee you get out now, the less is left to stain.
- Dab with cool water and blot again. Repeat two or three times. For a fresh black coffee spill, this alone often does it.
- Weigh it down. Put a dry folded towel on the spot with something heavy on top for an hour, to pull up the moisture from below.
If a brown mark is still there
Mix two cups of cool water, a tablespoon of clear dish soap and a tablespoon of white vinegar. The soap lifts any milk and sugar, and the mild acid in the vinegar helps loosen tannin.
- Dab the mixture on with a cloth. Don’t pour it on.
- Leave it for five minutes.
- Blot, working from the outside of the stain toward the middle so it gets smaller, not wider.
- Rinse by dabbing with plain cool water, then blot dry. Soap left in the carpet is sticky and will catch new dirt.
- Finish with the dry towel and weight, as above.
On wool, use only the water and dish soap, without the vinegar, and rinse well.
Coffee with milk, cream or sugar
Milk and cream are proteins, so hot water is especially bad here. Sugar leaves a sticky patch that turns grey as it picks up dirt. Do the soap-and-water steps above, and take the rinse seriously. If the spot smells sour a few days later, milk has soaked down into the backing and needs a proper extraction.
Old, dried coffee stains
Old stains are harder but often not hopeless. Lightly mist the spot with cool water to rehydrate it, wait a few minutes, then go through the soap and vinegar steps. It may take two or three rounds, with drying in between. If the mark is the same after that, stop. More scrubbing just wears the pile.
Tea works the same way as coffee. Herbal and fruit teas with strong colours, like hibiscus, can behave more like a dye and are harder to shift.
What not to use
- Hot water or a steam iron on the spot.
- Bleach or “oxy” powders on coloured carpet. They can leave a pale patch that’s permanent.
- Lots of liquid. Soaking the spot pushes coffee into the backing, where it wicks back up as the carpet dries. That’s the classic “it was gone yesterday and now it’s back” stain.
- Baking soda pastes that are left to dry in the pile. They’re hard to get out and leave a white residue.
When to call us
Call a professional if the stain is bigger than your hand, it’s on wool or a light carpet, it’s been there for weeks, or it keeps coming back after it dries. We pre-treat coffee and tannin stains with the right product for the fibre, then rinse them out with truck-mounted hot water extraction, which has far more suction than a rental machine. Carpet is usually dry in 3 to 6 hours.
A stain can be added to a regular clean, priced at $90 an area before the current promo, plus GST. If it’s urgent, see our carpet stain removal page.
Common questions
Does club soda work on coffee? It’s mostly water with a little fizz. It does no harm, but plain cool water works just as well.
Can I use hydrogen peroxide? It can lift coffee from some light synthetic carpets, but it can also lighten the carpet itself. Test it somewhere hidden first, never use it on wool, and rinse afterwards. If you’re unsure, leave it to us.
Why did the stain turn yellow after I cleaned it? Either soap or coffee is left deep in the pile and has wicked back up. Blot again with plain cool water and weight a towel on top overnight.
