Rug cleaning in Coquitlam and Port Moody: when your rug needs it, and how it's done

Walk into most newer homes on Burke Mountain or Westwood Plateau, or a condo at Suter Brook, and you’ll see the same thing: hard floors throughout, with area rugs doing the job carpet used to do. Rugs soften the room and protect the floor, but they also catch everything that comes through the door, from both sides. Here’s how to tell when your rug needs more than a vacuum, what a professional clean involves, and how to keep it looking good in between.

Six signs your rug needs a proper clean

  1. The colours look flat. Fine grit and oily soil dull the fibres long before a rug looks dirty. Fold back a corner: if the colour underneath is brighter, the whole rug has a film on it.
  2. There’s a grey path. The line from the couch to the hallway, or the strip under the dining chairs, shows up first.
  3. It smells when it’s damp. On a wet day, or after a spill, a musty or “doggy” smell means there’s soil and oil deep in the pile.
  4. Grit comes out underneath. Lift the rug and look at the floor. A layer of fine dust means grit has worked right through, and it’s wearing the fibres from below and can scratch the floor.
  5. Spots keep coming back. If a spill you cleaned reappears as it dries, it’s wicking up from the backing.
  6. It’s been more than a year. Rugs in busy family rooms, entries and homes with pets do best with a clean about once a year.

Rugs over hard floors

Most Tri-Cities rugs sit on hardwood, engineered wood, laminate or tile. That’s good for the rug, which gets airflow, but it means two things:

  • Moisture control matters. A good rug clean leaves the rug damp, not wet, so nothing soaks through to the floor. We use truck-mounted hot water extraction on rugs that can take it, which pulls the water back out with strong suction, and a wool-safe clean on wool.
  • Use a pad. A rug pad stops slipping, lets air move under the rug, and takes some of the wear. If you don’t have one, it’s worth adding after the clean.

What happens on the day

We clean rugs right where they are, in your home. Here’s how it goes:

  1. Fibre and dye check. We read the tag (you’ll have sent us a photo when you booked) and test a hidden corner for colour bleed, especially on rugs with strong reds or dark borders.
  2. Pre-treatment. Traffic paths, spots and any pet areas get treated first. Pet urine gets an enzyme pre-treatment.
  3. The clean. Synthetic rugs get hot water extraction. Wool rugs get a wool-safe clean at the right pH and temperature. Fringes are cleaned too.
  4. Grooming. The pile is brushed so it dries standing up and looks even.
  5. Walkthrough. We look at the result with you before we leave.

Hand-knotted, silk and antique rugs get a closer look first. If one needs specialist off-site washing, we’ll tell you honestly rather than risk it.

What it costs

Rugs are priced by size, plus GST. The current promo comes off jobs above our $210 minimum:

RugPrice
About 10×8 or bigger$90
Smaller than 10×8$65

A living-room rug, a hallway runner and an entry mat-sized rug come to $220 before the promo, just over the $210 minimum. Rugs can go in the same booking as carpet, couches or mattresses, so it’s one visit and one price, and you see the total before you book.

Drying and getting the room back

Most rugs are dry the same day. Flat-weaves and thin rugs dry fastest, and thick wool piles take the longest. Keep the rug flat, open a window or run a fan or the heat, and keep furniture and pets off it until it’s dry. We offer plant-based solutions, and everything we use is safe for kids and pets once dry.

Keeping it clean in between

  • Vacuum both sides every few weeks, and the floor underneath. It removes the grit that does the most damage.
  • Rotate the rug every few months so wear and sun fading spread evenly.
  • Put a washable mat at the door in the rainy months, so the rug isn’t your doormat.
  • Blot spills right away with a white cloth and cool water. Don’t rub, and on wool, skip solvents and ammonia.
