Dog vomit on the carpet or couch: how to clean it without leaving a stain
Every dog owner knows the sound. Whether it’s grass, a stolen snack or a long car ride, it always seems to land on the lightest carpet in the house or the middle of the couch. Vomit is harder to clean than it looks: it carries stomach acid, food dyes and proteins, all of which can stain and smell if they’re left or treated the wrong way. Here’s how to clean it properly, from the crew that sees the results of the wrong way.
This is cleaning advice, not vet advice. If your dog is vomiting often, can’t keep water down, or seems unwell, call your vet first.
Step 1: get the solids up without pushing them in
Don’t wipe. Wiping grinds it down into the pile.
- Put on gloves.
- Scoop up the solids with a dustpan, a spatula or a stiff piece of card, sliding it under from the edge.
- If it’s very wet, sprinkle a little baking soda or plain cornstarch on top, wait ten minutes for it to soak up the liquid, then scoop and vacuum that up too.
Step 2: blot out the liquid
Press a folded paper towel or white cloth down firmly, lift, and switch to a dry one. Keep going until almost nothing comes up. Work from the outside of the spot toward the middle so it doesn’t spread.
Step 3: clean with cool water and soap
- Test first on a hidden spot.
- Mix a cup of cool water with a few drops of clear dish soap. Not hot: heat cooks the proteins in vomit and sets the stain.
- Dab it on, wait a couple of minutes, and blot. Repeat with a clean part of the cloth.
- Rinse by dabbing with plain cool water, then blot dry. Leftover soap is sticky and attracts dirt.
On wool carpet or rugs, use only cool water and a little clear dish soap, and skip ammonia and solvents.
Step 4: treat the smell with an enzyme cleaner
Soap removes what you can see. The smell comes from proteins and bacteria deeper in the fibres. An enzyme cleaner from a pet store breaks those down. Test it on a hidden spot, then follow the label: most need to stay wet on the spot for a while, so don’t blot it straight off. Let it air dry.
The yellow or orange stain that won’t come out
Vomit often leaves a yellow, orange or red mark, especially on light carpet. Two things cause it. Stomach acid can change some carpet dyes, and the colouring in dog food and treats can act like a dye itself. Both are much easier to treat fresh. If a mark is left after the steps above, don’t keep scrubbing. Repeated scrubbing frays the pile and makes the spot look worse than the stain did.
Dog vomit on a couch
Check the cleaning code on the tag first:
- W: water-based cleaning is fine, so follow the steps above, using as little liquid as you can.
- S: solvent only. Scoop and blot, and leave the rest to a pro. Water can leave a ring.
- W/S: either works.
- X: vacuum only. Don’t put anything wet on it.
If the tag says S or X, or the smell is still there once it dries, book upholstery cleaning and we’ll match the method to the fabric.
If it soaked into a seat cushion, the foam inside can hold the smell even when the cover looks clean. Don’t put cushion covers in the washing machine unless the tag says you can. They can shrink and fade and may never fit or match again.
What not to use
- Hot water or steam on a fresh spot.
- Vinegar, bleach or scented sprays. They can set the stain, mask the smell for a day, or make it harder for us to treat later.
- Coloured cleaners that can add their own stain.
When to call a pro
Call us if the stain or smell is still there after it dries, if it went through to the backing or a cushion, or if it’s on wool, a rug, or a light-coloured couch. We find the spot, apply an enzyme pre-treatment, then flush and extract it with truck-mounted hot water, which has far more suction than a rental machine. We offer plant-based solutions, and everything we use is safe for your dog once it’s dry, usually in 3 to 6 hours.
Pricing is the same as a regular clean: $90 an area (a room, a sofa seat or a large rug) before the current promo, plus GST. Most pet homes book the whole room or the whole couch, because the smell spreads further than the stain. See pet stain and odour removal in Vancouver to book and see your price.
Common questions
Can I use a carpet shampooer on it? Only after the solids are gone and you’ve blotted it well. Otherwise you spread it around. Rinse with plain water afterwards so no shampoo is left behind.
Why does it still smell after I cleaned it? Some of it reached the backing or the underpad, where surface cleaning can’t get to. That needs an enzyme treatment and extraction.
Is the enzyme cleaner safe for my dog? Most pet-store enzyme cleaners are made for this, but keep your dog off the spot until it’s dry and follow the label.
