Rainy-season carpet care for North Shore homes

The North Shore gets more rain than almost anywhere else in Metro Vancouver, and from October to April a lot of it comes inside on boots, paws and bike tires. The homes we clean in Lynn Valley, Deep Cove, Lonsdale and around Edgemont all show the same pattern: a dark lane from the front door to the kitchen, grit at the bottom of the stairs, and a dog-shaped spot by the back door. Here’s how to keep that under control until spring.

Stop it at the door

Most of the dirt in a carpet arrives in the first few steps inside. Two mats make a big difference: a coarse one outside to scrape off mud, and an absorbent one inside to catch the water. Shoes off at the door does more for your carpet than anything else on this list.

For dogs, keep an old towel by the door and dry paws before they reach the carpet. Wet fur and paws carry fine silt deep into the pile, where it acts like sandpaper on the fibres.

Let mud dry before you touch it

It sounds wrong, but fresh mud is easier to remove once it’s dry. Wet mud smears and pushes deeper when you scrub it.

  1. Let it dry completely.
  2. Break it up gently and vacuum it out.
  3. Blot any mark that’s left with a white towel and cool water.
  4. If there’s still a shadow, leave it for the professional clean rather than reaching for a coloured cleaner.

Vacuum more often in winter

Grit wears carpet faster than anything. In the wet months, vacuum entries and hallways a few times a week, and go slowly. A fast pass picks up the surface and leaves the sand.

Watch for damp

North Shore basements and ground-floor rooms can stay damp through winter. If a carpet smells musty or feels cool and damp for days at a time, find the source first, whether that’s a leak, condensation or poor airflow. Cleaning won’t fix a moisture problem, and we’ll tell you if that’s what we find.

When to book a deep clean

Many households book twice a year: once in late fall to start the wet season clean, and once in spring to clear out everything winter brought in. Pet homes and busy family homes often add an entry and stairs clean in between.

Our truck-mounted hot water extraction rinses the silt out of the base of the pile, which a vacuum can’t reach. Carpet is usually dry in 3 to 6 hours, a bit longer on a damp day, so open a window or run the heat. Pricing is $90 an area (a room, a hallway or a set of stairs) before the current promo, and you see the total before you book.

Common questions

Can you get dog smell out of carpet? Usually, yes. Pet areas get an enzyme pre-treatment and a thorough rinse. Read more about pet stain and odour removal.

Is it worth cleaning in winter if it’ll just get muddy again? Yes. Grit left in the pile all winter wears the fibres permanently. A clean in late fall plus good door habits means less wear by spring.

Do you come up the mountain? Yes, across North Vancouver, from Lower Lonsdale up to Lynn Valley, Deep Cove and Edgemont. See prices and open times for carpet cleaning in North Vancouver.
