Keeping a clean home can seem like an endless task – there’s so much to do! It always seems like just when you’re getting a hold on things, the kids discover a new arts and crafts project where more muck seems to make it on to your floors than on the paper. As soon as you’ve finished scrubbing the floors, Fido comes tearing through the house after digging around in the garden. But don’t fret, at Dazzle CC we’re here to help you with a list of our favourite house cleaning tips. If it’s all just too much, and you’re ready to throw in the towel, just give us a call at 604-802-8500 and we can come get your carpets, tiles and grout, and even your driveway and walkway cleaned while you put your feet up and relax ideally with a cold beverage in hand.
How to Stop 80% of Soiling
Did you know that it takes 12 steps on a relatively clean surface to dislodge dirt from your shoes? Your driveway and the walkway up to your front door can be a great place to lose this soil if they’re kept clean. However, if your driveway and walkway are soiled, they won’t properly remove the dirt from your shoes meaning it’s going to make its way into the entrance of your home. From there, it’s very likely that it will make it’s way into the rest of your home. To prevent this, the first of our house cleaning tips is cleaning your driveway and sidewalk at least once a year.
Walk Off Mats
One of the best house cleaning tips we can offer is to invest in some walk off mats for the entry points of your home. We recommend a rough, bristley mat with a brush-like feel for outside of the door to brush off your shoes before entering your home. For inside, something machine washable is great, that way, it’s easy to ensure that it stays clean enough to remove the soiling from your shoes. Be sure to wash both mats regularly to prevent resoiling of your shoes.
Vacuum and Sweep Regularly
Most soiling can be easily removed if you get to it before it works it’s way into the surfaces of your home. By vacuuming your carpets 1-2 times per week, you keep the carpet fibres free of small particles like sand and dust. When those particles build up in your carpets it can act like a sandpaper, removing the luster of the fibres of your carpet and leaving permanent traffic marks in the areas you walk most regularly. That’s why one of our best house cleaning tips is just to get out that vacuum at least once or twice a week.
Your Flooring Affects Each Other
If you vacuum regularly but leave your tiled floors uncleaned, there will be some soil transfer from one to the other. Another one of the house cleaning tips we have to suggest is to first find out how soiled your tile floors are. Look for an area under some long-standing furniture or in a corner that isn’t walked on often and note the difference between these grout lines and the heavier traffic areas. If they look similar, a simple mop will do, if there’s a big difference in colour, it’s time for a professional deep cleaning of your tile and grout.
Let Your Soap Sit
Once of the easiest house cleaning tips involves you taking a break in the middle of your cleaning. Since soap works by making a more attractive bond for soil particles than the floor or surface it’s on, let the soap sit for 5 minutes. This will ensure the bond between the soap and soiling will be stronger than the bond between the soiling and the floor. Once you’ve taken a break, come back and finish the job, you’ll be so surprised at the difference just 5 minutes can make.
Now that we’ve let you in on some of our favourite house cleaning tips, you’re set up for success! But even with these tips, getting a professional cleaning once a year for your carpets, tile and grout, and driveway and sidewalk is the best way to ensure your home is a clean one.
