Different Types of Upholstery
Chenille, cotton, jute, leather, silk, linen, velvet, acetate, acrylic – upholstery comes in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and materials, and it’s important that each one is taken care of in different ways. Some fabrics can only hold up to certain kinds of cleaning – for instance, silk cannot be treated with heat as it can cause shrinking, and chenille should be cleaned with as little water as possible to avoid damaging the delicate fibers.
How to Clean Upholstery at Home

Next, put together a cleaning solution based on the fabric of your upholstery – always read the label first! An old standby that can be put together at home is 2 cups of warm water along with 3 tablespoons of dish soap and 3 tablespoons of vinegar. Whisk together very well, and then – and this is the fun part – scoop up ONLY the bubbles that you’ve made and place them on the upholstery stain!
We don’t want to fully saturate the delicate fabric with water – doing so could cause irreparable damage. Merely use the bubbles created from your cleaning solution; this will be concentrated enough to remove most stains.
Now, you can use a soft cloth or a soft cleaning brush – dampen either or with warm water and dab carefully at the stain, massaging the bubbles into the fabric gently. You’ll be amazed at how much dirt and grime comes out of the fabric and onto the cloth instead!
Afterwards, you’ll want to be very careful to make sure that the upholstery dries completely – you can even use a fan if you want to properly learn how to take care of your upholstery.
